For all your fish oil consumers -
My Dad saw on Good Morning America that there is an ongoing lawsuit against several companies who make fish oil supplements and do NOT remove the PCB's. There was a law passed in the 70's that requires companies to remove PCB's due to that fact that they cause cancer and birth defects.
My Dad said the companies being sued included Cosco, CVS, Rite Aid, NOW and several others.
I was not able to find anything on Cosco being sued, but I was able to confirm the others.
Just wanted to let you all know.
Just another reason to make sure you are using good quality supplements.

thanks alima! recently my doc told me to make sure that i take a good quality fish oil b/c although these companies are "supposed" to remove the pcb's, it is not monitored. just because a bottle SAYS something does not mean it's true - especially when it comes to supplements.

Good article, Carter. The "Because we can!" is enough reason for me!

Is there a brand you recommend? I usually just buy the ones at the pharmacy that say "NO FISH BURPS!!". :o)
Posted by: Donna | March 03, 2010 at 10:24 AM
Put them in the freezer = no fish burps.
Posted by: Sri | March 03, 2010 at 10:39 AM
okay, i have the ones from cosco (kirkland brand). can you recommend a good quality brand and let me know where i can buy them? thanks!

if you have a chiro that is also a nutritionist, they will usually sell them too. Xymogen is a brand my doc carries and it is really good.

I don't remember what brand mine are. Donna, what you mean "no fish burps"? Sri, what you mean "put in freezer = no fish burps"?

okay, another question re: fish oil. so, i went and listened to the gma report and read the article on it as well. then i started looking around - what is the difference (or is there a difference) between "fish oil" and "cod liver oil"? is one more beneficial? sorry, this totally may have been covered at the nutrition thing, but i missed it.

Brain - this refers to the capsules, which may not be the best way to get your fish oil, I'm not sure. Apparently, if you don't like the fishy taste, this can be a problem with keeping down the supplements, whether in oil or capsule form.

Donna - the pharmacy ones are definitely not the best quality and probably the ones you want to stay away from.
The companies that sell only to physicians make better quality products and always test to make sure there is no mercury and no PCB's.
Xymogen is a great brand, but you have to buy them from a doctor.
Jackie, there is controvery over the Cod Liver Oil. I actually take CLO instead of FO. Some people feel it is superior (my Dad was one of those). But my Dad called me today and he has read some new information and now he isnt so sure. The controversy mainly involves the levels of Vit A and Vit D in the Cod Liver Oil (I think). He told me he would give me more details later. If its something others are interested in, maybe my Dad could write up a little post for the site explaining.
I hope I answered some of the questions. Let me know if you have more and as I get more details from my Dad I will pass them on!

Ooohhh...I totally thought it had to do with the actual fish "burping" or something. Burps that smell like fish - that makes so much more sense. Thx Sri.

Alima - so the best stuff is from the doctor? As in, not so much over the counter?
Posted by: The Brain | March 03, 2010 at 01:55 PM
AL/TN/MS Sectional WOD's are posted on the CF Games site.

expect something of considerable torture in honor of Sectionals Saturday (on Saturday).

Correct Brain. And when I say physician, probably a chiropractor who is knowledgable about nutrition is your best bet.
You may be able to find a good quality one at Whole Foods, but I'm not sure.
The ones my Dad carries at his office are http://www.arcticoils.com/
Robyn, are these the same as the ones you get from your chiro?
Posted by: Alima | March 03, 2010 at 02:45 PM
I do belive they are the artic oils and there is no fish burp. I can get bottles from my chiro if anyone wants them and doesn't have a chiro that sells them. I am taking CLO right now but after what Alima/Alima's Dad says, I am going to prolly go back to FO while he decides which is best. I need all the Vit D I can get since I am so anti sun

YAY! THE WODS ARE POSTED! (careful Phil, you are starting to seem as obsessive as me!) :)
