Good - getting antsy without the Crossfit workouts!

jackie

so, i took yesterday as a rest day and went for a long run this morning. i don't know if it's the change in diet or what, but i completely bonked at mile 4... which made the last 6 miserable (a run-walk to finish)... anyone have any advice? i'm in panic mode as saturday i'm running the st. jude's half. my typical pre-long-run fuel previously consisted of half a pb&j (jelly being the polaner grape) on whole wheat bread... what would be a good paleo substitute?

cori

bananas, eggs and a fat (1/2 an avocado). the same thing happened to me at vulcan, but this last 10k i did, i made sure to up my fruit intake a couple of days before the run and that morning, i ate 2 eggs, 1 banana and 1/2 an avocado 2 hours prior to the race. i also had another banana 30 minutes before the race.

i also made a point to extra hydrate 2 days prior, 1 day prior and the morning of. also, being the 3rd day of paleo for you probably didn't help. also i added some celtic sea salt into my diet 2 and 1 days prior as well to help me retain some of the water that i would need on race day.

stay with it jackie. make sure you are eating more than you were before. as you know this is not a calorie or fat counting diet. eat when your hungry.

i feel confident you will be fine. :)

jackie, in general i would start by experimenting with increasing your fat and protein. like cori said, be sure you're getting enough food. it will take a few days for your body to adjust and figure out what to burn for energy and if you don't have enough food in your system... well, you bonk. i think cori is spot on with what to eat just before the race. you'll feel great once you figure out what your body wants! having enough food and water is key!

Donna

There's also some carb withdrawal for me with Paleo - while it's not as extreme as with Atkin's, it still makes its presence known. I think the fog had cleared for me around days 4 & 5.

jackie

thanks, all!

carter

ditto what Donna says. it takes a few days, for sure. you need a week to get your body runnin' right. you'll be optimal by your half. go get it!
